ABINGDON’S Jozef Metelka is celebrating after winning a cycling gold medal in Rio.
Metelka, who studied sports and coaching at Oxford Brookes University, won the C4 four-kilometre individual pursuit for his home country of Slovakia.
The professional ski instructor, who turned to cycling in 2013, lost his lower left leg in a motorbike crash in March 2009.
He now has 12 specially-made prosthetic legs which allow him to compete in cycle races around the world and continue to take part in sporting activities such as snowboarding, running and rollerblading.
Metelka said: “Losing my leg was the worst thing which could have happened to me but I have made the best of it and thankfully the technology is there nowadays.
“I have been helped by some very good people and I truly believe that there is nothing I can’t do.”
