Be Free Young Carers, based at Harwell Innovation Centre in Didcot, received a grant from The Didcot Powerhouse Fund to help aid the organisation’s services for young carers.

The donor-advised fund, which was founded in November 2021, gave a total of £95,508 worth of grants to 17 organisations in Didcot ranging from £400 to £13,000.

Be Free Young Carers is one of the organisations and community groups awarded.

Sabiene North, CEO of Be Free Young Carers, said “Our grant will enable us to provide local schools with a professionally produced video and toolkit as well as 1:1 emotional support sessions for our most vulnerable young people who undertake a caring role in their family.”

The organisation currently has 600 children registered from across South Oxfordshire and The Vale of White Horse where it has been operating for 27 years.

It recently announced its plan to expand into Oxford City Centre this summer where there is currently no support for young carers.

The grant from The Didcot Powerhouse, which is run by its umbrella company Didcot First and administered by Oxfordshire Community Foundation, will help these expansions within the charity as well as provide partnerships and support networks in schools for young carers to “nurture their education”.
