AN old mural has been discovered at a primary school in Abingdon during the refurbishment of the sports pitch.

The parent-teacher association at Carswell Primary School in Bostock Road have raised enough funds to get a brand-new sports pitch after the old one was ‘deemed unfit’.

However, during the process of refurbishing the pitch, it is believed a mural painting during the 1990s has been discovered on the wall beside the sports facility.

Once discovered, the parent of a child in year 3 realised they had painted the original mural about 30 years ago.

In a statement from the school, it said: “As the wooden walls were removed we were surprised to find an old mural on the wall beneath it.

“It looks like paintings by children of pupils watching sports. It’s interesting to see they are wearing bottle green jumpers just like we have today.

“Much of the mural, which only covers one corner of the pitch, has decayed through damp but there’s enough to get an idea of what it would have looked like.”

The PTA raised about £60,000 to cover the cost of refurbishment but a pledged donation has since dropped out and the group are now appealing to any local businesses to help cover the last £10,000 to refurbish the pitch.
