A TRIBUTE has been put together by Didcot Town Football Club for its former manager who has passed away.

Mike Worgan, who was manager of the club when they won the Reading Mercury Cup in 1978-9, passed away at home earlier this month.

Mr Worgan, who was born in Bristol, enjoyed played football as a child and was an “accomplished sportsman”.

He then taken on as an apprentice at Bristol City joining the Royal Marines in September 1954.

Afterwards, he met his wife Jan and got married in February 1960. They had three children, Tony, Jan and Stan, before they moved to Didcot where they lived for 30 years.

He worked at British Railways for the rest of his life but his love of football continued. He entered coaching and management becoming involved with both Long Wittenham and Abingdon Town FC for short periods of time but mostly with Didcot Town FC.

He helped run the club by joining the committee and even paid the FA competition entry fees one year.

As well as coaching at club level, he also coached youngsters as part of the Oxford United School of Excellence.

He also became manager of the British Rail National Football Team who in 1983 qualified for the Railway World Cup in Czechoslovakia

After retiring, he and Jan moved to Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset and celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in February 2020.

His funeral service will be at Sedgemoor Crematorium, near Burnham on Sea, at 10am on Thursday, June 30.
