Have you popped in to Wallingford’s St Mary’s Church lately?

On Saturday mornings there’s a cracking market where you can buy award-winning local cheeses, the finest organic vegetables, great-tasting beef and pork from the Chilterns and excellent bread, eggs, local flours, beers wine and honey.

St Mary’s Church, just next to the town hall, is the new home for Wallingford Local Producers Market (WLPM) which trades from 10am to 1pm every Saturday through November and December.

The cheese stall has the finest local cheeses, but don’t just take our word for it – they’ve been judged the best in Britain!

Among them is Sinodun Hill, the goat cheese currently made at Nettlebed Creamery by Norton and Yarrow from Little Wittenham. Sinodun Hill won Best New Cheese in the Artisan Cheese Awards this year, having been a silver award winner in World Cheese Awards.

The cheese makers Rachel Yarrow and Fraser Norton were also crowned Best New Producers at the recent Great British Cheese Awards. They just ousted their fellow-cheesemakers Rose Grimond and Tee Scotthorne from Nettlebed Creamery who were runners-up.

Come along and taste Bix and St Bartholomew cheeses from the Nettlebed Creamery alongside Sinodun Hill and see if you agree with the judges!

Barkham Blue, made by Two Hoots near Reading and voted Best Blue Cheese at the Artisan Cheese Awards last month, is a favourite blue cheese among our customers and always on sale at WLPM.

Waterloo, Wigmore and Spenwood, three great award-winning cheeses from the Village Maid dairy, are also sold every Saturday morning in St Mary’s Church.

But there’s so much more to WLPM than cheese.

You’ll find a mound of pumpkins and squashes alongside winter greens, carrots, beetroots, leeks and much more, all grown and freshly harvested locally, either at The Clays Market Garden in Warborough, or Tolhurst Organic at Whitchurch on Thames.

When you’ve feasted your eyes on the lovely vegetables take a look at the beautiful and colourful crafts: jewellery, ceramics, feltwork, wood, textiles and cushions to decorate your home; paintings, photographs and ingenious creatures made from wire and bottle tops! Our next column will feature the very special crafts which will make exquisite gifts for your family and friends this Christmas.

WLPM was set up 10 years ago to champion the best local produce.

This Saturday's market will be out in the market place – come and find us!
