Sir, I am interested to see the proposal for a ‘new garden city’ in the Vale. We have been expecting this to be revealed for some time as we are aware that Mr Dijksman had made an entry for the Wolfson Garden City competition.
Notwithstanding local objections and the somewhat intractable problems of building a ‘new city’ on a soggy floodplain, it is worth noting that quietly and without much fuss a complete ‘accidental city’ is being constructed in south Oxfordshire on the other side of the A34.
For convenience, we will charitably call this Didcot Garden City.
This may be considered a bit of a joke but everywhere from Sutton Courtenay in the north, to the Hagbournes in the south and west from the A34 and Harwell halfway to Wallingford, land is under active consideration for development.
It would be sensible to rationalise this development and get its infrastructure in order before carrying on with another garden city a couple of miles away on greenfield land.
