Sir, In the ‘Vale Vision’ recently dropped through my door, the Conservative administration lists ‘Ten things we have achieved together for Abingdon. Point number three says “Open air swimming pool saved!”
Yet, now only days later, Vale of White Horse District Council is engaging in a public consultation over the fate of the Abbey Meadow, in which out of the three envisaged scenarios, two of them involve closure and filling in of the outdoor pool! So the outdoor pool isn’t saved after all, or is it?
Seemingly, the budget of £7.6m is sufficient to fund a new leisure centre for Wallingford but not to upgrade the Abingdon outdoor pool, such that it becomes a ‘must visit’ leisure facility complete with restaurant, above the refurbished changing rooms and/or a smartened up riverside café on the lines of the Benson riverside bistro.
Has the Vale council thought about the costs of:
a) filling in the pool and
b) increased health costs as people once again take to swimming in the River Thames?
