Sir – In answer to the front page of the Herald, regarding the knocking down of the Regal.
Having only been on South Oxfordshire District Council since May this year, Elaine Hornsby is very quick to start putting her proposal for demolishing the Regal Centre forward.
One wonders if this is for the good of Wallingford, especially as, according to the mayor, Lynda Atkins, the old Waitrose site is being developed, to the owner’s own plans.
New homes are mentioned in her proposal, presumably taking up designated parking spaces away from shoppers.
What happens to all those who use the Regal – badminton; Wallingford Country Market; local producers’ market; disabled sport; more life; short mat bowls; blues and beer festival; blood donor sessions; swap shop; reception on Mayor’s Sunday; town Christmas festival, plus private functions?
Where do these people go during any demolition and rebuilding of a smaller centre?
SODC would be better putting financial help into repairing this well-known – and well-loved by many – Regal Centre.
Hopefully, this time, Mrs Hornsby and Mr Cotton will listen to the opinion of the majority of the people of Wallingford.
