Sir, The Herald reported recently that the Football Association had made a presentation to the North Berks Football League to mark its centenary this year but it did not mention that the milestone had been marked, also, by similar commemorative gifts from the Berks and Bucks FA and the Witney and District League, nor that the North Berks Referees’ Association had marked the centenary and the long association between the two organisations, which have always worked closely and harmoniously for the benefit of thousands of players.

The RA’s gift was a block and gavel in a lined mahogany box, all created by a gifted local craftsman, whose exquisite work had included a carved replica of the competitions’ emblem, the Uffington White Horse. It was presented to the council’s chairman Les Addison by Neville F Harris, of the RA.

At the same occasion, a presentation of a desk set was made to the North Berks president, William ‘Bill’ Gosling, who is the only person to have had an unbroken connection in one way or another with the competitions for 50 years.

I feel it would be a shame if these events were not recorded in your newspaper for posterity just as the formation of the League was recorded in 1909. It might also be interesting to find who could claim to be the league’s oldest former player as many of the pre-1939 players have passed away in recent years.
