Some pubs in Abingdon town centre fear competition from pub giant JD Wetherspoon, which has now submitted a planning application to develop the former Post Office in High Street.

But the building, in a prominent position in the town centre, has been empty now for three years and looks scruffy. It would be good to see it occupied again.

There are not as many pubs as there used to be on the Ock Street Run, a popular route for town drinkers, and the Wetherspoon venue could become an additional fixture before they move on to Ock Street.

A Wetherspoon pub will be popular with a young crowd, who will appreciate an alternative late-night meeting place, now that Strattons nightclub has closed.

The opening of a Wetherspoon pub, combined with the return of the Nag’s Head, on Abingdon Bridge, could help to boost trade in the town, and stop drinkers heading into Oxford or other locations at the weekend to spend their money elsewhere.
